Planting Justice Canvasser Job Description and Overview

Organizational Background:

Planting Justice is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Oakland,

CA with a mission to democratize access to affordable nutritious

food by empowering urban residents with the skills, resources, and

knowledge to grow organic food, expand economic opportunities, and

ensure environmental sustainability in our neighborhoods.

Job Responsibilities:

The main responsibility of a Planting Justice Canvasser is to raise

money for our organization as well as raise awareness to the greater

community.

Expectations:

• Be the face of Planting Justice and inspire others to become

involved monetarily in our organization.

• Make an average quota of at least $160 every week.

• Show up to work on time, and if unable to make it to work due to

illness or emergency, will contact Planting Justice and provide as

much notice as possible.

• Work cooperatively with a diverse group of 6 people known as

the Canvass Collective of Planting Justice.

Training:

New canvassers will be given a script to memorize for face-to-face

fundraising on the street. During the first week the new canvasser will

go out with each member of the canvass team to get a well rounded

training, and try to mold their own unique script by listening and

shadowing the experienced canvassers in our organization. Then

the new canvasser will be evaluated after two weeks of work. If the

canvasser in training does not average out to a $160 quota during that

time, the canvasser will be put up for review. If the canvasser achieves

this quota the team will welcome them to the cooperative and they will

receive greater group responsibilities such as data basing, phone calling,

and part time involvement in other departments in Planting Justice.

Compensation:

Salaried position based on experience.

Work Schedule:

Average work week is 36 hours, Monday through Friday from 10am-

5:30pm with two paid 15 minute breaks and one paid 30 minute lunch.

Nature of Employment:

We do everything we can to treat employees fairly, to establish clear

lines of communication, and to give them the tools they need to be

skilled advocates. However, it is really important that you know and

understand your employment relationship with Planting Justice.

Employment with Planting Justice is at will. This means that you are

not held to an employment contract, and neither are we. You are free

to quit at any time, for any reason, just as we are free to terminate your

employment at any time, for any reason.

Experience we would like to know about:

• Past fundraising, canvassing, public speaking, theater, debate

experience.

• Leadership or Team Building experiences.

• Communication and/or anti-oppression trainings.

• Working in a cooperative/holacracy environment.

• Knowledge of the food justice movement, especially in Oakland

and the greater Bay Area.

• At least 6 months experience street canvassing.

• Ability to speak a second language, esp. Spanish.

• High School or College diploma.

• Women, LBGTQ people, and people of color encouraged to apply.
