The most prolific evergreen forest tree throughout many parts of western North America. Fast growing tree can grow to 250 tall in the wild, but generally reaches 80 to 160 feet when planted in gardens. Distinctive deeply fissured bark, soft fragrant needles and reddish-brown hanging cones make it a handsome tree for specimen, windbreak, reforestation, and also widely used as a Christmas tree. Very strong wood for structural purposes, it is the most used timber tree in the west. Hardy zones 4-8.
